Evolution Of Snooker Tables

Just before the beginning of the 20th century, British Army cadets, who were often called “snookers,” began to play a game that was derived from a common British billiard game called Black Pool.

Eventually, the game developed some popularity and spread and was dubbed snooker in honor of the cadets. Snooker tables are quite similar to the British billiard tables, from which they were also derived, and today there is any number of billiard-style games that can be played on them.

Over time, the billiard pool tables evolved and came to be covered with cloth. The cloth helped to protect the playing surface and to make the ball action more predictable.

The addition of the cushioned rails and the pockets also evolved and went through a number of revisions before a standard was settled upon. Slate was introduced as a new material for the playing beds in the 1830’s and is the most common bed material used today in billiard tables and snooker tables.

Today’s snooker tables that are built for the modern game of snooker that people are familiar with have an internal playing area of 11 feet and 8.5 inches by 5 feet and 10 inches.

This means that the snooker table is not built to quite the same dimensions of other billiard pool tables which are exactly twice as long as they are wide.
