Keeping Caged Birds Engaged And Interested
If you have a pet bird in a cage, then you are confining a creature originally meant to fly freely. For this reason, you need to be concerned about bird health, and making sure your pet is cared for properly.
This means seeing to its food and physical security, as well as to its psychological needs. Caged birds need things that will get their mind engaged and interested, and it’s up to you to learn what those things are.
Many caged birds that have seed mixes prepared for them still do better if that diet is supplemented with other things. Some birds need extra vitamins added into their food, and often these are pre-mixed and put in with their regular seed mix.
The most common sort of cage bird, the budgerigar or budgie, can live mostly on seed mixes, but do even better when given some additional fresh foods like lettuce, carrots, apricots or bananas. Add a cuttlebone and mineral block, and all the nutritional pet care needs will be met.
After you have the nutritional and spatial needs of your pet bird dealt with, you need to add another element, which is social and intellectual stimulation. Most of these bird breeds are social creatures that will enjoy interacting with you.
Some, like finches, might need less than small parrots would, but all will appreciate feeling like they are part of the action in the household. If you take good care of the nutritional and psychological needs of caged birds, then they will provide companionship and beauty in your home for as long as they are with you.
