Squirrel Proof Feeders Protecting Birdseed

Squirrels have the uncanny knack of landing themselves in the bird feeder. To prevent the squirrels from eating the wild bird seed, people install squirrel proof feeders.

To ensure that the wild birds can enjoy the food that has been put out for them, bird enthusiasts go to great lengths to devise mechanisms to ward off the squirrels by purchasing squirrel resistant feeders. With a little observation and persistence, you can make sure that the food you are putting in the bird feeder is actually being consumed by the birds.

A home made solution to making your bird feeder squirrel proof is to hang something to baffle the squirrels. They are very adept at walking on telephone wires, yet they cannot easily walk down the wires on which the bird feeders are suspended.

In case they do so, hanging empty soda bottles along the line will catch squirrels off guard and throw them off the wire. Hanging three or four such bottles will result in a secure squirrel resistant feeder. This is the least expensive idea to implement in your attempt to feed the migratory birds.

Another way of making a bird feeder squirrel proof is to keep bird food in the feeder that is unpalatable to the squirrels. Suet bird food or cakes that are preferred by birds are not liked by the squirrels. Safflower seeds and niger thistle are other bird foods that squirrels disdain completely.
