Organic Gardening And Backyard Composting
Putting together a sustainable and high quality bed of soil for organic gardening requires some soil testing to get the process rolling.
Once the testing of the soil is done, there will be sufficient information to assess exactly what kind of conditioners and additives should be included in a soil treatment plan. Going forward, additional testing and improvement will be needed for organic farming, but with benefits will greatly outweigh the extra work.
In most cases, when the garden bed has been established with great quality soil that is able to support and sustain organic gardening, it can then be maintained by simply adding home composting on a routine basis. This can easily be done by replacing a layer of the garden soil with a layer from your compost.
When you are preparing the compost heap to be used in your organic gardening project, it is best to build up the compost pile until it is about four feet in diameter and also approximately four feet height.
It should be situated on a spot with good drainage and the pile should be enclosed with chicken wire so that it has good air circulation, but is still contained. After a period of three to four months it will be ready to mix in with your soil.
