A Koi Pond In Your Garden
One of the things that many people add as the crowning jewel in their specially designed gardens is a koi pond. Koi are fish that usually come from Japan (though they probably originated in Persia) and are a species of carp to be exact.
They are brightly colored in all sorts of uniquely different patterns. Stocking a pond with these fish can add extra distinction to even the most beautiful garden.
Several factors need to be kept in mind as one creates a koi pond. The first, of course, is size. Koi may start small, but they can become rather large, so you have to plan based on their future size.
The general recommendation is to have no more than one fish for every 100 gallons of water in the pond. And your pond design should include considerable depth as well, to guard against potential predators. In this regard, experts suggest between five and eight feet.
If you take the proper precautions, then you should have a healthy koi pond. Be sure to take as much care over your fish pond supplies as you do in selecting the fish and creating the pond itself. Have the proper filters to keep the pond clean, and remember that in the winter, the pond can’t be allowed to freeze over, so you’ll likely need a heater too.
The severity of the winter climate might even be a factor in whether you should have this type of pond at all. But hopefully, with the right preparations and precautions, you can create a jewel to set into your garden and lift it into the realm of the extraordinary.
