Pond Plants With Happy, Healthy Fish
If you want to put a fish pond in your garden, you’ll find that choosing the right pond plants is just as important as how you design the pond itself, and what types of fish you put into it.
It’s the plant ecosystem that will determine the health of the pond and that in turn helps provide an environment for happy, healthy fish. Yet you don’t just grab some plants at random and stick them into your pond, as certain types are required and all need to be there.
Pond plants that absolutely have to be part of the system are those that supply oxygen in the water that fish need to survive. Pond supply stores sell oxygenating chemicals, but nothing really does the job as well as plants themselves.
They also consume the by-products that result from bacteria breaking down organic matter in the water, and this slows down the growth of algae.
You will also want to add the balance of marginal plants that grow in the mud and shallow water along the edges of the pond. These pond plants add to the shade and cooling of the water, and can include such things as Iris or Marsh Marigold.
You may not think that the right choice of plants is a crucial element in pond care, yet these create the environment for the fish, and help determine the health and cleanliness of the pond. If you get the plants right, then chances are that your pond will thrive and survive for a long time.
