A Reputable Contractor
A good rule to go by when hiring a contractor is to never hire anyone who comes to your door or calls you on the phone to offer their services. This is especially so when you need to make repairs after a fire, flood or other natural disaster.
Legitimate licensed independent contractors do not do business in that way. To begin the process of selecting a construction company, you must first have a clear understanding of the work you want done in or around your home. Print out a list of the work you want completed.
Let them know a time when you will notify them of your decision and ask for references and to see their license and proof of insurance. Always check out any references they provide. You should also ask them to point out recent work in your area.
Make a point to go out and look at the sites and if it is possible, ask those homeowners questions about the work they had done. Were they able to communicate easily with the contractor? Was the work performed to their satisfaction? Was the promised schedule adhered to? Were their questions, problems or complaints resolved quickly? Would they use this home construction company again?
By asking the right questions, comparing estimates, checking facts and getting comfortable with the construction company, you can make your remodel or repair a safe, satisfying and pleasant experience. Just remember to trust your instincts.
If there is something about a contractor that just doesn’t feel right or if something in his or her behavior while at your home doesn’t seem professional or if something tells you not to trust one of the contractors who gave you an estimate, then don’t hire them.
