As a result of the profitable niche, trusted pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer and Novartis are now branching out to pet medicine, offering everything from life-saving cancer drugs to anti-anxiety pet meds. These medicines have been sold to cattle ranchers and poultry raisers for years, but now animals pets are seeing the benefits of such treatments.
Parasites like roundworms, hookworms, fleas, ticks, heartworms, tapeworms, whipworms and ear mites can be an awful problem for animals, requiring treatment with pet medicine. If left untreated, pets can develop skin disorders, inflammation, diseases, anemia, mange, scabies, paralysis, convulsions or even death.
Often times, no symptoms are observed until the pet is already infested with these microscopic organisms. Animals pets will scratch, lick and chew at themselves. They may have dandruff or missing patches of hair, or whimper while scratching. Veterinarians will prescribe oral pet meds, sprays, washes, collars or other treatments to fix the problem.
The FDA advises exercising caution when purchasing online pet care products, especially pet medicine. Pet owners should always make their purchases through a licensed U.S. pharmacy and should avoid online retailers that don’t demand a prescription for pet meds that typically require a script.
Drugs should be FDA-approved and should come with clear instructions regarding when and how to administer the drugs. By following these guidelines, consumers may be able to save some money while treating their pets.
